For too long, the land had suffered under the rule of a creature known only as the Demon Queen. None had ever seen her, but everyone knew where she lived: a dark castle located in the heart of a haunted forest. Normally enshrouded in mist, there were rumors that the castle could only be found by those who the Demon Queen wanted to find it. The only humans who had ever seen the inside of it are the humans that the Queen's monstrous minions have rounded up as slaves. No one knew what happened to the slaves who were brought to the Queen, only that they were never seen or heard from again. Most assumed that they were dead, but there was one knight not willing to leave that to chance.
Flynn Scifo had trained all his life to protect the people from monsters, and he wasn't satisfied knowing that there could be human lives enslaved by a demoness against their will. So he had spent his life preparing himself for a single purpose: find the castle, infiltrate it, free the slaves if they were alive, and avenge them if they were not.
To his disgust, he was the only human who seemed to be on board with this plan, the higher-ups in the knights were under the impression that if they let the Queen take whatever lowborn peasants (and maybe the occasional low-ranking noble) she desired, she would ultimately leave the realms of men alone. Flynn saw this as no better than human sacrifice, which he saw as no better than murder. He wisely kept this opinion to himself, but he still left on his quest regardless, ready to face the Queen's hordes alone.
However, it seemed fortune smiled on him. Along his travels, he was joined by a priestess named Xine who shared his goals. Flynn welcomed the help and journeyed with the priestess towards the forest the Queen's castle was said to be located in.
They had entered the forest shortly before nightfall, and Flynn had decided to set up camp for the night.
"We should rest here, Sister Xine," Flynn told his companion, setting his pack to the ground. "Our objective is at hand. I want to be able to make our final charge tomorrow. You can get some sleep; I'll take first watch."
